چکیده

Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) of zinc ions (Zn2+) from aqueous solutions using single anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) at low critical micelle concentrations (cmc) (0.2×cmc – 3×cmc) was investigated. When the initial SDS concentration was below the cmc, unexpectedly high rejection (97.5%) was obtained due to concentration polarisation occurring near the membrane-solution interface. Based on this mechanism, the true rejection of the solute is no longer a function of the initial SDS concentration in the bulk solution but a function of the SDS concentration at the concentration polarisation layer. The removal of Zn2+ at low Zn2+ feed concentrations was very efficient. The characteristics of Zn2+ ion adsorption to surfactant micelle were also studied. The Langmuir model could be used to elucidate the Zn2+ adsorption isotherm to the SDS micelle. The study demonstrates the potential practicality of the MEUF technique for the removal of heavy metal ion pollutants such as Zn2+ at low surfactant concentrations.

Removal of Manganese from an Aqueous Solution Using Micellar-Enhanced Ultrafiltration (MEUF) with SDS Surfactants

In the present study, micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was used to remove manganese (Mn) (II) from synthetic wastewater. The effects of different operational conditions on the filtration performance of MEUF or the membrane were studied. It was found that the transmembrane pressure has a major influence on the permeate flux and an insignificant effect on the rejection coefficient. The pe...

Micellar–enhanced ultrafiltration of chromate [Cr(VI)] ion from aqueous streams by using cationic surfactant

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in industrial effluent is one of the most serious environmental problems in India and also in other countries. Micellar-Enhanced Ultrafiltration (MEUF) of the chromate anions from aqueous solutions has been studied at room temperature (28±2°C) using cationic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), micelles of which adso...

Removal of Lead Ions from Aqueous Solution by Sorptive-Flotation Using Limestone and Oleic Acid

A simple, rapid and economic procedure was presented to remove lead(II) from aqueous solution under the optimized conditions. It is based on the sorption of Pb2+ ions from aqueous solutions onto limestone fines (LS), which is an inexpensive and widespread over the globe, followed by flotation with oleic acid (HOL) surfactant. The different parameters (namely: solution pH, sorbent...

Optimization of Copper and Zinc ions removal from aqueous solution by modified Nano-bentonite using Response surface methodology

Presence of heavy metal ions in wastewater is an important public concern. Adsorption are commonly used technique to remove various pollutants, including the ions, from contaminated water sources. However, common methods for adsorption are not completely efficient at low ion concentrations and the adsorbent should be improved in order to reaching the acceptable levels of adsorption efficiency. ...
